Microneedling 101

Microneedling 101

At Mix Beauty Lab we believe in result-driven, non-invasive treatments to deliver optimal results to our clients. Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment used to improve conditions such as acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, loose skin, skin texture, pore size, brown spots, stretch marks, under eye bags, and pigment issues on both face and body.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MICRODNEEDLING

Laser rejuvenation, chemical peels and other invasive methods are considered ablative, meaning they remove tissue to start collagen production in your skin. Lasers either remove the top layers of skin or remove only small parts / fractions of the skin (like a Fraxel or CO2 fractional laser).

Both microneedling and lasers result in collagen production that continues slowly months after treatment, however lasers remove tissue resulting in a much longer recovery time.

Microneedling is becoming increasingly more popular than laser treatments because it creates micro-injuries (tiny vertical channels in the dermis) without using heat and does not remove layers of skin. This is why the skin heals so rapidly from microneedling when compared to the recovery time from lasers.

The down time of various skin treatments is dependent on the depth of the needle used. Microneedling has very little downtime. Deep chemical peels can cause pain for as long as 2 weeks. Laser resurfacing can leave you red and swollen for up to 10 days. Treatments that do not destroy tissue like Thermage and IPL don’t cause significant down time, but you may get redness and swelling that lasts 2-3 days. With microneedling you can expect your face to look and feel like a slight sunburn for one day.

Microneedling can go very deep into the skin, up to 2 mm, to stimulate new skin growth and reduce scars

Q: How does Microneedling Work?

A: A needling device is used to penetrate the skin. This will create thousands of micro wounds. Your body responds to the wounds by producing significant amount of collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, this will rejuvenate your face by filling in wrinkles and scars.

Q: What Skin problems are Treatable by Microneedling?
A: Microneedling is proven to improve the following conditions: mild to moderate acne scars, fine lines, deep wrinkles, sagging skin (face and body), rough skin texture, pore size, sun damage, and stretch marks

Q: What Do I Look Like Post Procedure & What is the Down Time?
A: Depending on the depth of the treatment, you may experience some redness, mild swellings, pin-point blood spots that may last 24 to 48 hours. Your skin will become more smooth and radiant within the week.

Q: What Does the Treatment Consist Of?
A: The treatment includes cleaning and numbing of the skin. A derma stamp with microneedles is used to produce thousands of micro punctures in the skin. A high concentration of hyaluronic acid is infused during the treatment to enhance skin renewal and collagen growth.

Q: Does Mirconeedling Work on All Skin Colours?
A: Microneedling is safe for all skin types and colors. It doesn’t produce or cause post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Q: Is it Painful?
A: This depends on the treatment intensity. We do apply numbing cream to minimize discomfort at the beginning of the procedure.

Q: What are the Benefits of Microneedling?
A: Microneedling significantly improves the absorption and efficacy of all topical skin care products. It stimulates blood circulation and collagen production by over 1,000%, all the while being less abrasive to the skin. It can treat the face, body, skin around the eyes, mouth, neck and the scalp. Microneedling is proven to improve the following skin conditions on the face and body (chest, hands, knees, elbows):
  • Rough Skin Texture
  • Fine Lines
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Laugh Lines
  • Surgical Scars
  • Acne Scars
  • Chicken Pox Scars
  • Large Pores
  • Sun Damage
  • Aging Skin
  • Stretch Marks
  • Sagging Skin
Q: How Many Treatments Do I Need to See Results?
A: The number of treatments needed depends on the severity of your skin condition. Results are noticeable in as little as 1 treatment, however a series of 6 treatments is recommended for optimal long-term results.

Q: How Often Can I Repeat the Procedure?
A: You can perform a new treatment safely every 4-6 weeks.

Q: Is Microneedling Safe for Me?
A: Microneedling is harmless on all skin types since the epidermis is not damaged throughout treatment. The possibility of change in skin tones or hyper-pigmentation is small. Microneedling works on very sensitive regions (eyes, neck, back of hands) that can’t be addressed simply with other methods.
Microneedling is absolutely not appropriate for people who have used Accutane in the last 90 days, have poor wound healing, have open wounds, have had skin radiation therapy in the last year, are struggling with any kind of abnormal skin disease, are pregnant, and have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
